Oh, Canada

A year ago I had never been outside of the country and now I have used my passport twice. I just got back from Toronto, ON Canada. It is so close to the US so the culture is really just like the US except for little subtle differences. The easiest to point out are the different laws in Canada. They don’t have a pointless, outdated embargo with Cuba so cigars and rum from there are available just like anything else. You do have to buy spirits from an LCBO since that is regulated by the government. Their candy variety is different with items like Coffee Crisp, Wunderbar, and Aero.

Canada’s paper money looks way cooler than ours. It is multi-colored, plasticy, partially transparent, and sprinkled with holograms. They also no longer use pennies and all of their $1 and $2 money is in coin form. On our trip the exchange rate was about $1.29 CAN to $1 USD so things looked more expensive than they actually were. Toronto was not a cheap town for sure but it was not terrible at all. As a backward American, my credit card required a signature instead of a pin so they could always tell I was not from there.

Wanting to take every advantage I could while outside the US, Katie and I went to a market across from our AirBnB and I bought some unpasteurized milk to try. It tasted the same, if maybe just a little on the sour side but not enough to affect the taste much.

Toronto did not feel like it has much of its own identity but rather gets its charm by virtue of it having so many cultural neighborhoods within it. We went to one of their Chinatowns (yes, they apparently have like three of them) where there were also some great Mexican places serving things like fresh made churros, chicken avocado salad, and lots of other things I don’t see at the typical tex-mex joints around here.

In an attempt to salvage a modicum of credibility, we decided to go to the Art Gallery of Ontario. Is is a good size to see in an afternoon and still feel like you covered most of it. In a short time you can see classic art, contemporary art, sculpture, and even boat models on the lower level. There was a bride and photographer roaming around for a wedding that I can only imagine was astronomically expensive and being held after closing time. The gallery had a section on nuclear bombs and tragedies. The green chandler in the photo above is glowing under black-light from actual depleted uranium. Neat!

Overall, we had a great time and the trip was well worth the time. The people were nice, the city was clean, and it was not too busy that you can’t get around. I am sure I will be back at some point, but I can think of a dozen places I have never been that would be worth a go around before I return to Toronto. I can’t wait to see where I go next!

Las Vegas Visit

I just got back from my third trip to Las Vegas, NV. The first was with a group of friends, the second was just with my brother for business, and this one was with my brother and my girlfriend. I stayed at the Tropicana on the south strip. I have stayed there before on my first trip to Vegas and not too much has changed. There is a lot less of an artificial coconut smell than before and I actually missed that because I thought it would remind me of my first visit.

I ate like crazy there. Vegas has great food and my break from my diet was well utilized. The most damage was done at the buffet at Caesar’s. I drank several mimosas, and ate from every category they offered. I was as full as a tick.  We also went to the Eiffel Tower Restaurant for Katie’s birthday and the view was great and the food was pretty good.

On our last day, we took a trip out to the outlet mall and got some shopping in. I had never done this before on a vacation and it wasn’t bad. We all ended up buying leather jackets at a Wilson’s outlet. I didn’t think when I woke up that morning that I would be buying a leather jacket in spring but that’s what happened.

Vegas has the ability to just completely drain me. I have to walk everywhere, the buildings themselves are expansive, and there is so much going on at any given time. There are constant stimuli from the slot machines, people shouting at the craps tables, and the constant movement of people around you. When I got back home, I was drained and ready for some sleep to catch up. In contract, my last vacation was on a beach, at an all inclusive resort and each day was relaxing. I would just sit down by the ocean, read a bit, drink a bit, and talk with my girlfriend. It was great and I think I want to do something similar next time I get a few days off work. I think I need a few years break from Vegas to explore the rest that the world has to offer.

Private Cove in Punta Cana

I just got back from a vacation in Punta Cana, Dominican Republic. My girlfriend and I went there for New Years Eve. We stayed at a brand new resort called Chic and it was an overall great experience. After the new year we heard from the other travelers that there was a cove within walking distance of the resort. Being that my girl and I are both into a little adventure, we knew we had to check it out.

So, we traveled out to see what we could find. We took a sharp right at the beach and walked through lots of garbage and seaweed. It was pretty dirty out there and we were starting to think we were not going to find it. After over 10 minutes of walking on sharp rock rocks in flip flops we came to the cove! There were rocks there to absorb the energy from the waves and that made the water pretty calm and beautiful. There were rocks pretty close to the water so we didn’t get in to swim but walked around and explored the area. It was great to be on a beach alone for a while.

Also, RIP my old Canon ELF that took this video. It was sadly left in my pocket in the resort pool later in the stay. 🙁
